The Winston-Salem Foundation
Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) Award
Nominated by Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center Foundation

An integral part of the Winston-Salem community for over 100 years, The Winston-Salem Foundation continues to lead the charge for inclusion, diversity, equality, and access for all.  Geared to assist the community with effectively tackling of current pressing challenges, The Winston-Salem Foundation focuses on two main areas - building an inclusive economy and advancing equity in education.

In addition to these overarching principles, the Foundation has three key strategic initiatives which expand philanthropy to those who may previously have been under-represented or overlooked: the Black Philanthropy Initiative, The Women’s Fund, and Youth Grantmakers in Action. Through these three strategic initiatives, hundreds of traditionally marginalized individuals now have a voice and a role in philanthropic decisions, as well as a support system for their interests, supported by professional staff. Hundreds of nonprofits and their clients have benefited from these Winston-Salem Foundation initiatives, assisting those organizations to better serve their constituents and stakeholders.

In February of 2021, The Foundation announced it was distributing over $1.2 million in community grants. Yet the positive impacts of The Winston-Salem Foundation’s efforts go beyond just dollar amounts. As one of the country's oldest community foundations, The Winston-Salem Foundation has strategically positioned itself to tackle key initiatives for the next century, focusing on solving systemic issues that challenge the Winston-Salem community.
